Neil Crofts - profile October 2003

Neil Founded Authentic Business in Spring 2002 as an online newsletter to tell the story of businesses pursuing a positive purpose where profit is an outcome rather than the over riding aim. The newsletter now has 3500 subscribers who value the inspiring stories of successful businesses who also contribute to society and the environment and demonstrate that GOOD business is good BUSINESS.

Neil has written Authentic – how to make a living by being yourself published by Capstone in October 2003. The book was WH Smith book of the month in November 2003. And is a practical guide for anyone who feels a sense of tension between who they are and what they do and would like to reduce that tension and find a fulfilling way to make a living.

In summer 2003 Neil founded Authentic Business Guides to help good businesses to be big and not big businesses to be good and to demonstrate to the business community at large that there is an alternative and better way to do business. Authentic Business Guides are not consultants because consultants work to insure managers against the consequences of taking decisions where guides go on a journey with you. This approach is already proving popular with authentic clients such as: Communications design company Ethical Media,  Clothing companies Howies and Hug, Energy companies Solar Century and Good Energy as well as publishers Alastair Sawday Publishing and Positive News.

Neil is greatly assisted by the founding in spring 2003 of sister company Authentic PR by Kat. Authentic PR is about communicating for companies with integrity. Authentic PR has also proved popular with authentic clients such as Organic Express and Cafe Direct.

Neil is currently working on the foundation of Authentic Capital to provide investment funding for authentic businesses, which will secure them against the risk of ultimately having to sell out ideologically.

Alongside this Neil offers authenticity coaching sessions to help people discover their authentic selves, their point in life and their natural languages.

In previous lives Neil has raced cars, been self-employed, run a company and sold it, been employed by large companies, experienced growth and contraction at the heart of the dotcom boom, tried changing companies from the inside and from the outside as European Head of Strategy at internet consultancy/rock band Razorfish.

In 2003 Neil got married to Benedicte and they had their first child "Minnie" in October they live in converted school outside Bath.
