The other evening I was at home relaxing watching television and an old episode of ‘Airport’ came on. I always enjoyed the series. It always reminds me of my times of travel and excitement and of seeing people bustling on the concourse and feeling my hopes rising and feeling as though my dreams are appearing through the mist of uncertainty and becoming more solid. Watching the screen you see such a diversity of travellers and then all the staff of Heathrow [it could be any airport really]. The end credits to ‘Love Actually’ always come to mind as well when watching this program.

When I was a young child, probably about 8 years old, my father showed me a magical trick that has endured a lifetime. He showed me a photograph emerging on paper in a darkroom. I was hooked. He bought me a camera and showed me how to develop film. He showed me how to print black and white photographs. Ever since, I have carried a camera. To me, taking photographs is a way of life.

As we get stuck into the 21st century many elements that appeared to be “givens’ in our “developed” society are coming into question. We have the “good” job, we have our beautifully designed homes, our landscaped gardens, our shiny cars, our kids in “good” schools, designer clothing, exotic holidays and more. And yet, and yet for many there is still something missing. It is becoming clear that the price we are paying for our material success is too high, both personally and as a society.
